IELTS 11 TEST 4 WRITING TASK2

Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is true that many governments aim to promote economic growth. Some people think that economic development is the most important national objective. Others think that other kind of improvement, especially in welfare and abolition of discriminations, should be prior to it. In my opinion, governments should give priority to well-being of society rather than economic progress.

To begin with, economic affluence is considered the ideal goal in both developed and developing countries. The improvement of economic condition provides citizens with public facilities, public transportation service and stable employment. Therefore, it seems that economic growth directly results in the social happiness of citizens. However, in a number of countries, the economic development has brought about a number of social issues. These governments pursue the improvement of economic growth so excessively that they often tend to neglect well-being of society.

Even in developed countries, there is tremendous gap between the rich and the poor and there are severe discriminations against women, the elderly and foreigners. These social issues are closely connected with economic problems. A lot of people suffer from the economic plight and employment inequality. However, in order to pursue economic growth, governments tend to benefit the rich and abandon the weak. From my point of view, the progress of social equality is the most important national goal, because it is essential to realize the happiness of citizens.

In conclusion, I disagree with the view that governments should pursue economic progress. I strongly believe that the expansion of social welfare is crucial for a country.
